In association with Valentine’s Day, Yolanda Abel and Sue Small offer Teaching with Heart: Celebrating Self and (Re)Connecting with Wonder. How do we allow our hearts to lead the way as we juggle the demands of teaching and balance the rest of our lives? Join us as we reflect on our journeys and reaffirm our celebratory moments.

Most of us become teachers for reasons of the heart.

  • We teach because we care deeply about our students and about some subject. But the demands of teaching and the conditions in some schools cause too many of us to lose heart as the years go by.
  • Is it possible to take heart once more so that we can continue to do what good teachers always do– which is to give heart to our students?”

–Parker J. Palmer, The Courage to Teach

Yolanda and Sue each taught in public schools and are university professors. Dr. Abel has over 28 years working with educators and has participated in several Circle Of Trust© retreats. Dr. Small is also a former principal and is still teaching, learning, and mentoring faculty as well as facilitating mini circles of trust for People Embracing Equality and Love at a church in Baltimore.

Saturday, March 20, 2021, 11am-12:30pm ET/8am-9:30am PT
Sandie Merriam and Diane Petteway, both longtime public school teachers and Courage to Teach® facilitators, offer The Who that Teaches.

  • The question we most commonly ask is the “what” question – what subjects shall we teach?
  • When the conversation goes a bit deeper, we ask the “how” question—what methods and techniques are required to teach well?
  • Occasionally, when it goes deeper still, we ask the “why” question –for what purpose and to what ends do we teach?

But seldom, if ever, do we ask the “who” question –  who is the self that teaches?

How does the quality of the selfhood form – or deform –  the way I relate to my students, my subject, my colleagues, my world? How can educational institutions sustain and deepen the selfhood from which good teaching comes?

Marian David offers Sustaining the Soul that Teaches as a gift to support those with the courage to teach, to explore practices to sustain them. Marian created Sustaining the Soul that Serves as she worked with college students teaching in the Children’s Defense Fund Summer Freedom Schools. As she directed the Freedom School program, Marian quickly discerned that her young teachers were burning out, often lacking a deeper understanding of  how to do the inner work that would sustain them.  Marian has had many years of experience in public schools as a teacher and guidance counselor.

Pricing: Kirkridge is committed to providing heartfelt and generous programming that is available to all. This retreat is considered a gift to teachers. The cost of providing each program in this series is approximately $20 per person. Please support this program if you are able, including sending to others who would benefit from this and/or who can help financially support this work.  As always, all are welcome regardless of ability to pay.
